A Word from the Principal...

Dear Families,

As we pass the mid-point of the year, an update on some key programing seems appropriate. While we have many instructional initiatives underway, we have three systems in which we partner with parents to address behavior and climate in our school.

As you are all aware as evidence by the RESPECT program sign off sheets, we have a positive behavior system, RESPECT, at OSMS. This is based on research based practices proving that teaching expected behaviors, providing re-teaching, and natural consequences when necessary coupled with an incentive program supports a positive climate. Central to positive behavioral support systems is a “reboot” or whole school re-teaching of behaviors around the mid-point of the year. Student should expect this re-teaching within the next two weeks of school.

Safe School Climate

A second area of focus is our Safe School Climate program. This committee is comprised of parents, teachers, students, para educators, administration and the SRO. Your participation in our annual surveys coupled with staff and student surveys are vital to informing the goals of the committee. We will be checking the progress of our work by administering student surveys on our goals in March. This will help the committee adjust our work to meet the Safe School Climate goals.

Finally, our advisory program, PRIDE, has worked closely with students to identify topics to address during our meetings. To date, much of our work has focused on teacher/student relationships, Safe School Climate, Bullying, Cyberbullying/ Cyber Safety, Rumors and Cliques/Stereotypes. We will continue to address these topics and would welcome the opportunity to work with families to reinforce these skills at home, as students have identified a need for continuity of expectations. We will be offering parent seminars to review PRIDE lessons in the near future.

Central to our work with students is our continued partnership with families. We have found communications from families to be essential to our work and welcome continued input from each of you. Feel free to contact me with any questions about these programs or any other school-wide feedback.
