Old Saybrook High School Graduate Receives Sandy Hook Hero’s Memorial Scholarship

Old Saybrook High School Graduate Jenna Palko has been named the 2020 Connecticut recipient of the Vicki Soto Memorial Scholarship. This one-time $5,000 award is awarded to just one senior in Connecticut and one other senior in the nation in memory of Victoria Soto, a teacher who heroically lost her life while protecting her students during the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in 2012.

According to the scholarship’s official website, “All recipients of the scholarship must be pursuing a college degree at an accredited university in the field of education and demonstrate excellence in academics, extracurricular activities and leadership skills. The recipients must also demonstrate the spirit to Live, Laugh, and Love both life and education the way Vicki did.”

Ms. Palko plans on attending Eastern Connecticut State University to pursue a degree in Childhood Education. She has already begun preparing for her eventual career in the classroom through the Old Saybrook High School internship program, completing classroom based internships during her Junior and Senior years at Kathleen E. Goodwin School. Ms. Palko also worked at the local Sherwood School.

According to Ms. Palko, “I am really honored to receive this scholarship, and I am excited for the opportunity it offers me to fulfill my dream of becoming a teacher.”
