Students in Ms. Santoro’s Advanced Cooking classes at Old Saybrook High School welcomed Josh Welch of JW Beef LLC for a firsthand look at where food, agriculture, and the restaurant industry come together.

Welch, who raises grass-fed cattle in southeastern Connecticut and is also co-owner of Bridge and Graze Burgers, shared his experience with students and gave them another opportunity to connect what they are learning in the classroom with careers and possibilities beyond it.

Last week, our ninth graders took part in a two-day Freshmen Retreat through Old Saybrook High School’s Link Crew program. The experience began on the OSHS turf with games, trust-building, and problem-solving alongside Link Crew Leaders, teachers, Camp Hazen staff, and Old Saybrook Youth and Family Services.

On Friday, the program moved to Camp Hazen for a full day of activities including canoeing, archery, and the Alpine Tower. The retreat is one way Link Crew helps freshmen build connections and become more comfortable with high school culture and expectations.

OSMS brought the whole school together Friday for a spirited Celebration of Learning. The afternoon celebrated summer learning and the start of a new year with games, raffle prizes, and staff skits reinforcing school-wide expectations. One of the best parts was the support students showed for classmates representing their grades, with plenty of cheering from start to finish.

On Wednesday, September 9, a Career Pathways leadership team from Old Saybrook High School - Associate Principal David Plotkin, STEM Pathways Coordinator Karen Dionne, and Tech Ed teacher Cliff Taylor - joined Board of Education members Marijke Kehrhahn and Jane Wisialowski for a shop floor tour of Sound Manufacturing/Monster Equipment, an advanced manufacturing firm located in Old Saybrook. Dr. Kelli Vallieres, Owner and Chair of Sound's Board of Directors, shared the history of Old Saybrook High School's partnership with Sound, introduced a number of Sound employees who demonstrated their work, and offered many ideas for collaboration. Dr. Vallieres told the visitors that Sound has always been a family-owned shop, located in Old Saybrook for the last 20 years, that offers family-friendly resources and work schedules. Our heads were full of great ideas by the time we left - we look forward to building a productive partnership!

Goodwin started the year together on Friday, September 4, with the first Goodwin Gathering of 2026-2027! The entire school came together to celebrate a great start to the year, share some laughs, and continue building the sense of belonging that makes Goodwin such a special community. Student emcees Samantha Herman and Charles Giavarini helped lead the meeting, giving students a voice in running the gathering itself. This is exactly what our strategic plan pillar of Belonging and Ram Identity looks like in action.
