The fifth graders at Old Saybrook Middle School showcased their biography wax museum today for families and peers in sixth and seventh grade. Students read a non-fiction book on a famous historical figure, scientist, artist, or athlete who made significant contributions in history. They learned about the person’s life, accomplishments, and conflicts or obstacles they faced. Students created a tri-fold board including pictures and a timeline with important events in their person’s life. Students talked to adults and older peers about their person in a “museum” environment with everyone stopping to see the students’ exhibits and chat with them. Our fifth graders also represented their characters with props, costumes, and artifacts.

This week, our Old Saybrook High School and Grade 8 students had the opportunity to hear from Chris Herren, founder of The Herren Project.

Chris shared his powerful personal journey of how addiction took hold behind the scenes of a successful basketball career, and how recovery gave him a second chance at life. Through an honest, direct message, he spoke about choices, consequences, and the importance of seeking support.

Students described the presentation as “powerful” and said it “gave them a different perspective,” noting that Chris spoke to them like adults: real, respectful, and impactful.

We’re grateful to Chris Herren for helping our students reflect on decision-making, personal responsibility, and making healthy choices. Opportunities like this support student growth both inside and outside the classroom.
